Opportunity Details | People's Potato Garden Volunteer drop-in hours!
Opportunity Name:
People's Potato Garden Volunteer drop-in hours! |
|
Description:
VOLUNTEER EXPECTATIONS You don’t need experience with gardening, just an open heart and mind! Any task we ask you to do is up to you and how able you feel to do it. If you don’t want to do a task, you’re free to do something else or rest!
We will provide all equipment necessary (tools, gloves, sunscreen), but!
We would advise you to wear clothes you can get dirty in, closed toed shoes that are water resistant, a hat, and sunscreen. We will have a few hats & sunscreen to spare, just in case.
Make sure to bring a water bottle with you! There is water available nearby.
Produce is shared between food security groups, our volunteers, and our kitchen space. Volunteers can always bring home produce from the garden for their hard work!
GARDEN LOCATION & TRANSIT Our garden is on the Loyola Campus of Concordia University.
It is the fenced in space located next to 7075 Terrebonne street.
Using the metro and bus, you can catch the 105 West from Metro Vendôme, the 51 West from Metro Snowdon, the 162 West from Villa Maria.
If you are a Concordia student, you can also catch the shuttle bus from George William Campus downtown.
ACCESSIBILITY The Garden is entered from street level. You have to go up a short but moderate incline (~40%) on grass to get into the garden. There is unfortunately no ramp at this time. There are two bathrooms available within 15m walking distance. One bathroom is wheelchair accessible, however, wheelchair access is difficult because there are several doors to cross before accessing the bathroom.
The garden is a small fenced-in plot with uneven terrain made up of wood chip walking paths and rows of plants. There is a small table with outdoor chairs for people to sit underneath a tarped and vined wooden structure that provides shade from the sun. There are padded benches and knee pads available for kneeling or sitting garden work.
Like in our kitchen, we STRONGLY SUGGEST that our volunteers avoid wearing strongly scented fragrances for others who are scent sensitive.
As previously mentioned, Any task we ask you to do is up to you and how able you feel to do it. If you don’t want to do a task, you’re free to do something else or rest! Please take breaks, drink lots of water, and pace yourself while working!
All garden coordinators speak English, and Sosa speaks both French and English.
SCHEDULE Volunteer shifts are drop-in and happen every Tuesday and Wednesday from 11am to 3pm, starting May 21st, 2024. We ask that when you come to volunteer, please spend at least one (1) hour in our garden space, but only when they are available!
We will email everyone if the volunteer shift is canceled due to the weather.
SHARE THE LOVE! If you have any friends who might be interested in joining us in the garden this season, please send them the volunteer mailing list sign form! |
